30 Years of Non-Profit Leadership for the Planet

Since 1994, Global Green has served as the U.S. national affiliate of Green Cross, founded by President Mikhail Gorbachev. With consultative status at the United Nations and recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Global Green focuses on disaster recovery, building sustainable communities, raising environmental awareness, and driving climate action projects.

Its 10-year mission is to help keep humanity within safe planetary boundaries by aligning the shared interests of people, places, and the planet. Global Green is the founder of the “Global Green Alliance,” the “Millennium Sustainability Awards,” and the renowned “Pre-Oscar Galas” in Los Angeles.

Often referred to as the “Red Cross for the Environment” (Green Cross), Global Green is also a proud partner of The Earth Charter and supported by high-profile celebrity advocates and corporate partners. Notably, Brad Pitt collaborated on a sustainable rebuilding project in New Orleans.

The Maldives: Beyond Paradise, a Commitment to the Future

Discover how an island nation is combating climate challenges and reinventing waste management, transforming threats into opportunities to protect its precious ecosystem.

For the Maldives, a very small island nation about a meter above sea level, climate change continues to be the biggest threat. The impact of global climate change is so evident and real in the Maldives. Tidal swells, which often occur almost every month, destroy crops and homes in the islands, showing a reality far different from the tourist image.

This “Ocean State,” composed of just 1% land, depends intrinsically on its ocean for food, protection, and income. However, ocean plastics and pollution have become a growing concern, with approximately 20,000 tons of plastic produced annually, of which less than 5% is recycled. For decades, waste management at Thilafushi involved dumping and open burning, a method that was clearly not sustainable, although it was the available solution at the time given limited resources.
